(Abū Dāwūd.)

Vocabulary: iʾti fulānan — go to such-and-such a person; fa-shtari minhu daqīqan — buy flour from him; khatan — son-in-law.

Translation: Ḥaḍrat Sahl ibn Saʿd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Ḥaḍrat ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Sayyidatunā Fāṭima (may Allah be pleased with her) — [the narrator gives] the ḥadīth to its end, and in it is this: The Sayyida (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "Go to such-and-such a Jew and buy flour from him." So he went to him and took the flour. Then the Jew said, "Are you the son-in-law of that man who claims that he is the Messenger of Allah?" He said, "Yes!" Then he said, "Take your dīnār as well, and the flour is yours too."

(Recorded by al-Bukhārī and Muslim — N — Kalkatta.) [reading uncertain]

Translation: Ḥaḍrat Aḥnaf ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates in a long ḥadīth: He said, "I asked Abū Dharr: What do you say about this gift?" He said, "Take it, for in it there is help for today; but

when it becomes the price of your religion, then leave it."

(Reported by Muslim — Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ.)

Vocabulary: al-jūʿ — hunger; yastaʿdhibu lanā mina'l-māʾ — he has gone to bring sweet water for us; al-mudya — a knife; al-ḥalūb — a milk-giving [animal].

Translation: Ḥaḍrat Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out one day or one night, and saw that Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were also out. He said, "What has brought the two of you out of your homes at this hour?" The two of them said, "Hunger." He said, "By the One in whose hand is my life, the very thing that brought you two out has brought me out too. Get up!" So they stood up with him. Then he came to one of the Anṣār and found that he was not at home. When (his) wife saw him, she said, "Marḥaban, ahlan wa-sahlan" (you are welcome). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to her, "Where is so-and-so?" The woman said, "He has gone to bring sweet drinking water for us." Just then that Anṣārī also arrived. When he saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his two companions, he said, "Thanks be to God! Today no one is more honoured than I in respect of hospitality." Then he said, "Come," and brought him a bunch of dates in which there were unripe ones, ripe ones and half-ripe ones too. Then he submitted, "Please eat this," and took up a knife. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Avoid the milch [goat] (the milk-giving goat)" (that is, do not slaughter it). Then he slaughtered (a goat) for him. The three gentlemen then ate from the goat and from that bunch, and drank water; and when they had eaten their fill and quenched their thirst, the Messenger of Allah

ﷺ said to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, "By the One in whose hand is my life, on the Day of Resurrection you will certainly be asked about this blessing. Hunger brought you out of your homes, and you did not go back until this blessing reached you (you received it)."

(al-Bukhārī, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah.)

Vocabulary: fal-yukrim ḍayfahū — let him honour his guest, show him hospitality; yawmun wa-laylatun — one day and one night; ṣadaqa — a deed of reward, a good deed.

Translation: Ḥaḍrat Abū Shurayḥ al-Kaʿbī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that [the Prophet ﷺ] said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Day of Resurrection should honour his guest (act as his host): one day and one night. Hospitality is up to three days; whatever is after that is ṣadaqa (a deed of reward). And it is not permissible for that guest to stay with him until he puts him into difficulty.

(al-Bukhārī — al-Tajrīd.)

Translation: Ḥaḍrat ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give me gifts, and I would submit, "Give it to the one who is in greater need than I." Then he said: Whatever comes to you of this kind of wealth, take it, provided you are neither hoping for it nor asking for it; and whatever is not like that, let your gaze not run after it, nor let your heart be set on it.

(al-Bukhārī — al-Tajrīd.)

Translation: Ḥaḍrat ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said: A man will go on begging from people until, on the Day of Resurrection, he will come in such a state that there will not be a single piece of flesh on his face (he will be disgraced).

(Praise be to Allah, the fourth and last part of Kitāb al-Dīn is complete.)
