Chapter: On Visions of Light and Voices

On Visions of Light and Hearing of Voices

"And when Musa (Moses) had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of Mount Tur a fire. He said to his family: Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there some information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves. And when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in a blessed spot from the tree: 'O Moses, indeed I am Allah, Lord of the Worlds.'" (Al-Qasas, 28:29–30)

The author explains: This Quranic episode illustrates that Allah may communicate with His chosen servants through extraordinary means — lights, voices, and spiritual visions — as He did with Musa (peace be upon him) on the sacred valley. Such manifestations are not confined to Prophets alone; the saints (awliya') of Allah may also experience spiritual illuminations (anwar) according to their proximity to the Divine. These experiences are among the signs of the maqam of Ihsan — worshipping Allah as if one sees Him.

Narrated by Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): He asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) whether he had seen his Lord. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I saw Light (Nur).' (Muslim). The author discusses the various scholarly positions on what this light was — whether it was a veil of light or an actual spiritual vision — and the profound implications for the doctrine of the proximity of prophethood to the Divine.
