The Book of Ihsan (Excellence in Worship)

Narrated by 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said — in the Hadith of Jibril: 'And as for Ihsan, it is that you worship Allah as though you see Him; for if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.' (Narrated in Muslim; this is the famous Hadith of Jibril, the foundational definition of Ihsan.)

The author explains: Ihsan is the highest station of religion, transcending both Islam (outward submission) and Iman (faith). It means worshipping Allah with perfect presence of heart — as though you are beholding Him directly. If one cannot attain that state of vision (mushahada), one should at minimum maintain the consciousness that He sees you. This is the essence of worship in its most perfect form: the union of the outer act and the inner state of the heart before the Divine Majesty.
