Chapter: On Acceptance Among the People
باب فی قبول الخلق — مخلوق کے پاس قبولیت کے بارے میں
بَابٌ فِيْ قَبُوْلِ الْخَلْقِ
On acceptance with the creation (that is, being accepted among people).
قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالٰى: فَلَمَّا رَاَيْنَهٗۤ اَكْبَرْنَهٗ وَقَطَّعْنَ اَيْدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلْنَ حَاشَ لِلّٰهِ مَا هٰذَا بَشَرًا اِنْ هٰذَاۤ اِلَّا مَلَكٌ كَرِيْمٌ ۔
(Yūsuf 12:31)
Vocabulary: fa-lammā raʾaynahū akbarnahū — then when those women saw Yūsuf, they deemed him very great. It is said that citrons (turanj) had been placed in the women's hands; wa-qaṭṭaʿna aydiyahunna — and they became so dumbstruck and beside themselves that, instead of the citrons, they cut their own hands; wa-qulna ḥāsha lillāh — and they said: God is pure of all faults, He is far [above them]; ḥāsha — far, he went far. This word is also used as an exclamation like an oath: subḥāna'llāh, mā shāʾa'llāh; mā hādhā basharan — this is no human being; in hādhā illā malakun karīm — this is none other than a noble angel. What man is he? He is an angel.
Translation: Allah Most High says: When those women saw Yūsuf (peace be upon him), they deemed him very great, and they cut their own hands and said, "Ḥāsha lillāh" (subḥāna'llāh)! This is no human being; this is a noble angel.
اِذَا اَثْنٰى عَلَيْكَ جِيْرَانُكَ اَنَّكَ مُحْسِنٌ فَاَنْتَ مُحْسِنٌ وَاِذَا اَثْنٰى عَلَيْكَ جِيْرَانُكَ اَنَّكَ مُسِيْءٌ فَاَنْتَ مُسِيْءٌ ۔
(Ibn ʿAsākir from Ibn Masʿūd — Kanz al-ʿUmmāl.)
Vocabulary: idhā athnā ʿalayka — if they praise you; muḥsin — good, doer of good; musīʾ — bad, doer of evil.
Translation: Ibn ʿAsākir narrates from Ḥaḍrat Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him): When your neighbours praise you, saying that you are good, then you are good; and when your neighbours say of you that you are bad, then you are bad.
(Kanz al-ʿUmmāl, with the siglum "q", from Abū Hurayra.) [reading uncertain]
Translation: Ḥaḍrat Abū Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Allah loves a servant, He calls Jibrīl (peace be upon him): "Allah holds so-and-so dear, so you too hold him dear." So Jibrīl begins to love him. Then Jibrīl proclaims among the dwellers of heaven: "Allah holds so-and-so dear, so all of you too hold him dear." So the dwellers of heaven also begin to love him. After that, acceptance for him comes about on earth.
(Aḥmad [ḥm], Ibn Abī Shayba [sh], Ibn Mājah [h], al-Ṭabarānī [ṭb], al-Baghawī, al-Ḥākim in al-Kunā, al-Dāraquṭnī in al-Afrād [qṭ], al-Ḥākim [k], [q], from Abū Zuhayr al-Thaqafī — Kanz al-ʿUmmāl.) [reading uncertain]
Translation: Ḥaḍrat Abū Zuhayr Thaqafī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: It is near that you will know who are the people of Paradise and who are the people of Hell, and you will distinguish (set apart) the good among you from the bad by good praise and bad praise. From the earth, before Allah, Mighty and Majestic, some of you are witnesses over others.
