The Virtues of Siddiq al-Akbar

فضائلِ صدیقِ اکبر

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

1. The Successor of Muhammad al-Mustafa

محمدؐ مصطفیٰ کا جانشیں صدیقِ اکبرؓ ہے ۔ بجز پیغمبروں کے سب سے اعلیٰ سب سے برتر ہے

The successor of Muhammad al-Mustafa is Siddiq al-Akbar — after the Prophets, he is the highest and the most excellent of all.

أَخْرَجَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ الْأَكْوَعِ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ : أَبُو بَكْرٍ خَيْرُ النَّاسِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ نَبِيٌّ (السيوطي في كنز العمال ج ۶)

Reported by al-Tabarani from Salama ibn al-Akwa', who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Abu Bakr is the best of people, unless there be a Prophet.' (al-Suyuti, in Kanz al-'Ummal, vol. 6) — That is, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) declared Abu Bakr to be better than all people, save only that he was not a Prophet. Abu al-Darda also narrates that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Has the sun risen or set upon anyone more excellent than Abu Bakr — unless he be a Prophet?' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa)

2. Giving the Zakat of Wealth After al-Mustafa

زکوٰۃِ مال بعدِ مصطفیٰؐ صدیقؓ کو دینا ۔ اشارہ ہے خلافت کا یہ ظاہر بلکہ اظہر ہے

That the zakat of wealth, after al-Mustafa, was to be given to Siddiq — this is a sign of (his) caliphate, plain, indeed plainer than plain.

عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ بَعَثَنِي بَنُو الْمُصْطَلِقِ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ أَنْ نَسْأَلَهُ إِلَى مَنْ نَدْفَعُ صَدَقَاتِنَا بَعْدَكَ فَأَتَيْتُهُ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ إِلَى أَبِي بَكْرٍ (أخرجه الحاكم وصححه)

Narrated by Anas: The Banu al-Mustaliq sent me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him, 'To whom shall we hand our charity (zakat) after you?' So I came to him and asked, and he said, 'To Abu Bakr.' (Reported by al-Hakim, who declared it sound.)

عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ تَسْأَلُهُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهَا ارْجِعِي فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنْ لَمْ أَجِدْكَ تَعْرِضُ بِالْمَوْتِ فَقَالَ إِنْ لَمْ تَجِدِينِي فَأْتِي أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّهُ الْخَلِيفَةُ مِنْ بَعْدِي (أخرجه ابن عساكر)

Narrated by Ibn Abbas: A woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask him for something, and he told her to return. She said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what if I come and do not find you?' — alluding to (his) death. He said, 'If you do not find me, then go to Abu Bakr, for he is the caliph after me.' (Reported by Ibn Asakir.)

3. Laying the Foundation Stone of the Mosque

پڑی بنیادِ مسجد کی رکھا بعدِ نبیؐ پتھر ۔ ابوبکرؓ و عمرؓ و عثمانؓ نے یہ فضائل اور ہے

When the foundation of the mosque was laid, after the Prophet a stone was set in place (by Abu Bakr); and Umar and Uthman too — this is yet another of (Abu Bakr's) virtues.

عَنْ سَفِينَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَضَعَ الْمَسْجِدَ وَضْعًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَضَعْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَجَرَهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ حَجَرِي ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَضَعْ عُمَرُ حَجَرَهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ حَجَرِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ثُمَّ قَالَ لِيَضَعْ عُثْمَانُ حَجَرَهُ إِلَى جَنْبِ حَجَرِ عُمَرَ ثُمَّ قَالَ هَؤُلَاءِ الْخُلَفَاءُ مِنْ بَعْدِي (عدّ في فضائل الصحابة)

Narrated by Safina: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laid (the foundation of) the mosque, then said, 'Let Abu Bakr set his stone beside my stone.' Then he said, 'Let Umar set his stone beside Abu Bakr's stone.' Then he said, 'Let Uthman set his stone beside Umar's stone.' Then he said, 'These are the caliphs after me.' (Counted among the virtues of the Companions.) — So he laid the foundation stone of the mosque and set down one stone, and bade Abu Bakr place a stone beside it; then he bade Umar place a stone beside Abu Bakr's; then he bade Uthman place a stone beside Umar's; then he said, 'These shall be the caliphs after me, in this very order.'

4. Leader of the Muslims and Guide of Mankind

امامِ مسلمین اور پیشوائے مرد و زن صدیقؓ ۔ امت کی باطل جہاں صدیقِ اکبرؓ ہے

Siddiq is the leader (imam) of the Muslims and the guide of men and women alike; where the community of Islam is, there Siddiq al-Akbar is.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ : لَا يَنْبَغِي لِقَوْمٍ فِيهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَنْ يَؤُمَّهُمْ غَيْرُهُ (السيوطي في كنز العمال ج ۶)

Narrated by Aisha: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'It is not fitting for a people among whom is Abu Bakr that any other than he should lead them in prayer.' (al-Suyuti, in Kanz al-'Ummal, vol. 6) — It is well known to all that the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not come suddenly; rather his illness was somewhat prolonged. During that time, in accordance with the Prophet's directive, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq led the prayers, while all the Companions were present. The Messenger had also said, 'Whoever among them is most learned in the Qur'an, let him lead them.' And Siddiq al-Akbar was the most knowledgeable in the Qur'an, and the most learned of them. Sayyiduna Ali al-Murtada (may Allah ennoble his face) said: 'The Messenger of Allah chose Abu Bakr for the affair of religion (the leadership of prayer); so we too chose him for the affairs of this world (the caliphate).'

5. Your Piety (Taqwa)

خدا نے شانِ صدیقؓ کے اتقیٰ ہے فرمایا ۔ وہ اتقیٰ ہے وہ عند اللہ اکرم اور بہتر ہے

Concerning the rank of Siddiq, God has called him 'the most God-fearing' (atqa); he is the most pious, and with Allah he is the most honoured and the best.

قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ

Allah Most High says: 'Indeed, the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the most God-fearing among you.' (al-Hujurat 49:13) — that is, the most honoured among you in the sight of Allah is the one most conscious of God; that great one among you is the more honoured who is the more pious.

أَخْرَجَ ابْنُ أَبِي حَاتِمٍ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ أَنَّ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ أَعْتَقَ سَبْعَةً كُلُّهُمْ يُعَذَّبُ فِي اللهِ ۔ فِيهِ نَزَلَتْ وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا الْأَتْقَى الَّذِي يُؤْتِي مَالَهُ يَتَزَكَّى وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِنْدَهُ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ تُجْزَى إِلَّا ابْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ الْأَعْلَى وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَى (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

Reported by Ibn Abi Hatim and al-Tabarani, from Urwa: that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq freed seven persons, every one of whom was being tortured for the sake of Allah. Concerning him was revealed: 'And the most God-fearing one shall be kept far from it (the Fire) — he who gives his wealth to purify himself, and who confers no favour on anyone for which he is to be repaid, but only seeking the Face of his Lord, the Most High; and surely he will be well pleased.' (al-Layl 92:17–21; in Tarikh al-Khulafa.) — That is, the man who is most God-fearing, who gives away his wealth and keeps it pure, who has no obligation owed to anyone for which he must seek a return, but acts only seeking the pleasure of his Most High Lord — surely he shall be well pleased.

6. The Prophethood of Muhammad — Never a Doubt

محمدؐ کی نبوت میں نہ شک آیا کبھی ہرگز ۔ وہی اسلام میں سابق وہی رتبہ میں اکبر ہے

In the prophethood of Muhammad there never came to him a single doubt; he was the foremost in Islam, and the greatest in rank.

قَالَ ابْنُ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ التَّيْمِيُّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ مَا دَعَوْتُ أَحَدًا إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا كَانَتْ لَهُ عَنْهُ كَبْوَةٌ وَتَرَدُّدٌ وَنَظَرٌ إِلَّا أَبَا بَكْرٍ مَا عَتَمَ حِينَ ذَكَرْتُهُ وَمَا تَرَدَّدَ فِيهِ (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

Ibn Ishaq said: Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn al-Husayn al-Taymi related to me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I never invited anyone to Islam but that he showed some hesitation, wavering, and reflection — except Abu Bakr: he did not hold back when I mentioned it to him, nor did he waver in it.' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa) — That is, when the Messenger of Allah called others, they hesitated and reflected; but Abu Bakr did not delay.

عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ أَسْلَمَ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَبُو بَكْرٍ (ابن عساكر من طريق الحارث)

Narrated by Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah ennoble his face): 'The first of the men to embrace Islam was Abu Bakr.' (Ibn Asakir, by the route of al-Harith.) — Among the (first) men to bring faith was Abu Bakr; he was the foremost of all, the best of creation and the most just of them, the best in nature and the most God-fearing of all.

7. He Used to Attend the Prophet's Whispered Counsels

محمدؐ مصطفیٰؐ پر جب بھی حق آتی تو سنتے تھے ۔ یہ کتنا مرتبہ صدیقؓ کا اعلیٰ ہے برتر ہے

Whenever truth (revelation) came upon Muhammad al-Mustafa, he (Abu Bakr) would hear it — how high and exalted a rank is this of Siddiq!

عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ كَانَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَسْمَعُ مُنَاجَاةَ جِبْرِيلَ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَلَا يَرَاهُ (أخرجه ابن أبي داود في كتاب المصاحف)

Narrated by Abu Ja'far: 'Abu Bakr used to hear the whispered communing of Gabriel with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), though he did not see him.' (Reported by Ibn Abi Dawud in Kitab al-Masahif.) — Narrated from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir: Abu Bakr used to hear Gabriel's intimate discourse with the Prophet, yet he did not behold the one who spoke.

8. His Faith Outweighs the Faith of the World

اگر ایماں صدیقؓ اور ایمانِ جہاں تولیں ۔ تو غالب پہ بہ موزوں صدیقؓ کا ایمان اکبر ہے

If the faith of Siddiq and the faith of the (whole) world were placed on the scales, the faith of Siddiq would prevail, outweighing the rest — it is the greater.

عَنْ عُمَرَ قَالَ لَوْ وُزِنَ إِيمَانُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ بِإِيمَانِ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ لَرَجَحَ بِهِمْ (أخرجه البيهقي في شعب الإيمان)

Narrated by Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): 'If the faith of Abu Bakr were weighed against the faith of (all) the people of the earth, it would outweigh them.' (Reported by al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman.) — That is, were the faith of Abu Bakr to be weighed against the faith of all the people of the earth, his would prove the heavier upon the scale.

9. His Good Deeds — As Many as the Stars of Heaven

عمرؓ کی نیکیاں اتنی ہیں جتنے چرخ پر انجم ۔ عمرؓ صدیقؓ کی نیکی کے یہ فرمان سرورؐ ہے

Umar's good deeds are as many as the stars upon the heavens; (yet) this is the saying of the Master concerning the good deeds of Umar and of Siddiq.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ بَيْنَا رَأْسُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي حَجْرِي فِي لَيْلَةٍ ضَاحِيَةٍ إِذْ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هَلْ يَكُونُ لِأَحَدٍ مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ عَدَدُ نُجُومِ السَّمَاءِ قَالَ نَعَمْ عُمَرُ قُلْتُ فَأَيْنَ حَسَنَاتُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ قَالَ إِنَّمَا جَمِيعُ حَسَنَاتِ عُمَرَ كَحَسَنَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ (رواه رزين في خير المواعظ ج ۲)

Narrated by Aisha: While the head of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was in my lap on a moonlit night, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, can any person have good deeds as many as the stars of the sky?' He said, 'Yes — Umar.' I said, 'Then where stand the good deeds of Abu Bakr?' He said, 'All the good deeds of Umar are but as a single one of the good deeds of Abu Bakr.' (Reported by Razin in Khayr al-Mawa'iz, vol. 2.) — I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what manner of person has so many good deeds, as many as the stars in the sky?' He said, 'Yes — such are Umar's good deeds.' I asked, 'And where are the good deeds of Abu Bakr?' He said, 'All of Umar's good deeds are equal to but a single good deed of Abu Bakr.'

10. How Lofty His Nature, How Pure His Disposition

نہیں پی مے نے کبھی صدیقؓ نے اسلام سے پہلے ۔ یہ کیسی فطرتِ اعلیٰ ہے اور طبعِ مطہر ہے

Never did Siddiq drink wine, even before Islam — how lofty a nature is this, and how purified a disposition!

أَخْرَجَ أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ بِسَنَدٍ جَيِّدٍ عَنْهَا قَالَتْ لَقَدْ حَرَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الْخَمْرَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

Reported by Abu Nu'aym, with a good chain, from her (Aisha), who said: 'Abu Bakr forbade wine to himself in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyya).' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa.) — Abu Nu'aym says, with the soundest chain: Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha said, 'Abu Bakr made wine forbidden to himself even in the time of Jahiliyya.'

11. His Name was Abdullah — A Name with a Hidden Meaning

زمیں پر ایک مردہ بے ارادہ جلتا پھرتا تھا ۔ یہ وجہ اسمِ عبد اللہ ہے اور مضمر ہے

(Without God) a dead, will-less thing wanders burning upon the earth; herein lies the reason of the name 'Abdullah' (servant of God), and a hidden meaning.

قَالَ النَّوَوِيُّ اسْمُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ هُوَ الصَّحِيحُ الْمَشْهُورُ (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

al-Nawawi said: 'The name of Abu Bakr is Abdullah; this is the sound and well-known view.' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa.) — al-Nawawi said, 'The name of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is Abdullah'; and this is the authentic and famous view.

12. He Carried the Prophet upon His Own Shoulders

اٹھایا صدیقؓ نے بازوئے نبوت اپنی گردن پر ۔ وہی توثانیِ اثنین اور ہمراہِ پیمبرؐ ہے

Siddiq bore the arm of prophethood upon his own neck; he it was who was 'the second of two' (thani ithnayn), the companion of the Prophet (in the Hijra).

عَنْ ضَبَّةَ بْنِ مِحْصَنٍ الْعَنَزِيِّ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي حَدِيثِ الْهِجْرَةِ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ مَشَى لَيْلَةً عَلَى أَطْرَافِ أَصَابِعِهِ حَتَّى حَفِيَتْ رِجْلَاهُ فَلَمَّا رَآهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَمَلَهُ عَلَى كَاهِلِهِ يَشْتَدُّ بِهِ حَتَّى أَتَى بِهِ فَمَ الْغَارِ فَأَنْزَلَهُ (الدينوري في المجالسة وأبو الحسن بن بشران في فوائده وقد في دلائل والكلاباذي في السنة)

Narrated by Dabba ibn Mihsan al-'Anazi, from Umar ibn al-Khattab, in the account of the Hijra: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked one night upon the tips of his toes until his feet were worn bare. When Abu Bakr saw this, he carried him upon his shoulder, hastening with him, until he brought him to the mouth of the cave and set him down. — That night the Prophet kept walking upon his toes lest his footprints be seen; his blessed feet grew sore. When Abu Bakr saw the Prophet's feet thus, he lifted him upon his shoulders and bore him along, so that they might press on, until they reached the very mouth of the cave.

قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى ثَانِيَ اثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِي الْغَارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَاحِبِهِ لَا تَحْزَنْ إِنَّ اللهَ مَعَنَا فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ سَكِينَتَهُ عَلَيْهِ (التوبة ۴۰)

Allah Most High says: '(He was but) the second of two, when the two were in the cave, when he said to his companion, Grieve not; indeed Allah is with us. Then Allah sent down His tranquillity (sakina) upon him.' (al-Tawba 9:40.) — In the Noble Qur'an it is told: the two were in the cave; he was saying to his companion, 'Do not grieve; surely Allah is with us.' Then Allah sent down upon him His tranquillity. Abdullah ibn Ahmad narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Abu Bakr is my companion and my comfort in the cave.' And al-Zuhri narrates that the Messenger of Allah said to Hassan (ibn Thabit): 'Have you said anything concerning Abu Bakr?' He said, 'Yes,' and the Prophet said, 'Recite, that I may hear.' He recited his verses in praise of 'the second of two within the noble cave,' and the Prophet smiled until his blessed teeth showed; then he said, 'You have spoken truly, Hassan — it is just as you have said.'

13. He Quenched the Fire of Apostasy

بجھایا آتشِ ردت کو آپؓ تیغِ برّاں سے ۔ یہ ہے اسلام کی خدمت کہ جو کارِ پیمبرؐ ہے

He extinguished the fire of apostasy (ridda) with his flashing sword — this is a service to Islam, which is the very work of the Prophet.

أَخْرَجَ عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ قَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَوْمَ الرِّدَّةِ مَقَامَ نَبِيٍّ مِنَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

Reported from Abu Husayn, who said: 'On the day of the Apostasy (al-Ridda), Abu Bakr stood in the station of a Prophet among the Prophets.' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa.) — It is narrated from Abu Husayn that on the day the apostates rose up, Abu Bakr stood in the place of a prophet among the prophets, holding firm in the stead of a prophet.

14. Did Anyone Do a Kindness — God Will Requite It

کسی نے گر کیا احسان میں نے کر دیا بدلہ ۔ جزا صدیقؓ کو دے گا خدا جو سب سے بہتر ہے

(The Prophet said:) 'If anyone did me a kindness, I have repaid it; but the reward of Siddiq, God will give — He who is the best of all.'

عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ مَا لِأَحَدٍ عِنْدَنَا يَدٌ إِلَّا وَقَدْ كَافَأْنَاهُ مَا خَلَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَإِنَّ لَهُ عِنْدَنَا يَدًا يُكَافِئُهُ اللهُ بِهَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ (الترمذي ۔ مشكوة)

Narrated by Abu Hurayra: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'There is no one who has done us a favour but that we have repaid him — save Abu Bakr; for he has a favour upon us which Allah Himself shall repay him on the Day of Resurrection.' (al-Tirmidhi — Mishkat.) — The Messenger said: 'I have repaid the kindness of every one of you, save the kindness of Abu Bakr; for the reward of his kindness Allah shall give him on the Day of Resurrection.'

15. He was Present with the Prophet in Every Place

نبیؐ دامادِ والا شان میں صدیقؓ اکبرؓ کے ۔ وصالِ عشقِ صدیقؓ اکبرؓ کا اسی میں رازِ مضمر ہے

The Prophet became the noble son-in-law of Siddiq al-Akbar; in this lies hidden the secret of the union of the love of Siddiq al-Akbar.

قَالَ السُّيُوطِيُّ وَلَهُ الْآثَارُ الْجَمِيلَةُ فِي الْمَشَاهِدِ وَثَبَتَ يَوْمَ أُحُدٍ وَحُنَيْنٍ وَقَدْ فَرَّ النَّاسُ (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

al-Suyuti said: 'And he has beautiful traces (of valour) in the (battle-)scenes; he stood firm on the day of Uhud and on the day of Hunayn, when the people had fled.' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa.) — al-Suyuti said: Siddiq al-Akbar was with the Prophet in the battles — at Hudaybiyya, at Badr, at (the battle of) the Confederates (Ahzab), at the battle of Ta'if — in every place. He bore beautiful marks; he stood firm at Uhud and Hunayn, though (others of) the people had fled.

16. He was the Spiritual Master and Guide of the Paths

طریقہ قادری اور نقشبندی کا اور شطاری ۔ ہماری کا بھی علیؓ رہنما ہے اور رہبر ہے

The Qadiri path, and the Naqshbandi, and the Shattari (Sufi orders) — of all of them (and of ours) Ali too is the guide and the leader (and these too trace back to Siddiq).

طالعه هو السمط المجيد للقشاشي ۔ ومجمع السلاسل (للمصنف)

(For the detail of this, consult al-Simt al-Majid by al-Qushashi, and Majma' al-Salasil by the author.) — That is, the chains (silsilas) of the Sufi orders pass through Hazrat Abu Bakr al-Siddiq.

17. His Grief at the Prophet's Passing

نبیؐ کے بعد غسل و کفن کیے موئے صدیقؓ بھی رائی ۔ یہ عشقِ جانستاں سب سے اعلیٰ سب سے برتر ہے

When after the Prophet's passing the washing and shrouding were complete, even the very hair of Siddiq turned white — this soul-surrendering love is the highest of all, the most exalted.

أَخْرَجَ سَيْفٌ وَالْحَاكِمُ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ كَانَ سَبَبُ مَوْتِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَفَاةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ كَمَدًا فَمَا زَالَ جِسْمُهُ يَنْحَلُّ (في تاريخ الخلفاء)

Reported by Sayf and al-Hakim, from Ibn Umar, who said: 'The cause of Abu Bakr's death was the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); it grieved him so that his body never ceased to waste away (until he died).' (in Tarikh al-Khulafa.) — Sayf and al-Hakim narrate from Ibn Umar: the cause of Abu Bakr's death was the death of the Messenger of Allah; from that day his body continued to melt away, until his last breath.

18. Laid to Rest in the Embrace of the Prophet

پس مُردن مِلی ہے جائے آغوشِ محمدؐ میں ۔ بنا اس خاک سے جس خاک سے جسمِ محمدؐ ہے

After death, he was given a resting place in the embrace of (the place of) Muhammad — fashioned from the same dust from which the body of Muhammad is.

عَنْ عِمْرَانَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ خَرَجَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ وَدَخَلَ الْمَسْجِدَ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرُ أَحَدُهُمَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَالْآخَرُ عَنْ شِمَالِهِ وَهُوَ آخِذٌ بِأَيْدِيهِمَا فَقَالَ هَكَذَا نُبْعَثُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ (رواه الترمذي)

Narrated by Imran: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out one day and entered the mosque, with Abu Bakr and Umar — one on his right and the other on his left — and he was holding their hands, and he said, 'Thus shall we be raised on the Day of Resurrection.' (Reported by al-Tirmidhi.) — Abdullah ibn Umar narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came forth one day and entered the mosque, and Abu Bakr was on his right hand and Umar on his left, and he was holding the hands of them both; then he said, 'In this very manner shall we rise up together on the Day of Resurrection.'
