Sūrat al-Naṣr
سورۃ النصر
Sūrat al-Naṣr, Madanī — revealed in Madīna. It has three (3) āyāt.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillāhi l-Raḥmāni l-Raḥīm.
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
إِذَا جَاءَ نَصْرُ اللَّهِ وَالْفَتْحُ
idhā jāʾa naṣru llāhi wa-l-fatḥ.
"When the victory of Allah comes and the conquest." (al-Naṣr 110:1)
Idhā — when. Jāʾa — it came. Naṣr — victory, aid, help, God's. Al-llāh — Allah's. Wa-l-fatḥ — and the opening of the locks of the enemies' fortresses, the opening of the gates.
Translation: "When Allah's victory came (the enemies were overcome) and their fortresses were opened."
وَرَأَيْتَ النَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِي دِينِ اللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًا
wa-raʾayta l-nāsa yadkhulūna fī dīni llāhi afwājā.
"And you saw the people entering Allah's religion in multitudes." (al-Naṣr 110:2)
Wa-raʾayt — and you saw — certainly, you saw them. Al-nās — the people. Yadkhulūna — they were entering, coming inside. Fī — in. Dīni llāhi — the religion of Allah. Afwājā — in groups, crowds, waves — groups, crowds, gatherings — troop after troop.
Translation: "And you saw the people in great numbers (crowd after crowd) entering Allah's religion (Islam)."
Esteemed readers! When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began delivering the message of Islam, all the world became his enemies — various categories of troubles reached him — he left Makkah al-Mukarrama, which was his homeland — but Allah did not let the oppressors rest. Abu Jahl never let him sit in Madīna in peace — the oppressors harassed him from every side and tried to keep him from sitting peacefully — Saʿd ibn ʿIbāda gave a threat to those who came to Madīna: "If you go against the tradition, we will also drive you from Madīna by force — the disbelievers were planning a trading caravan to cut off the provisions of the Muslims — the Madīnans wished to stop this caravan — but the caravan got through and fighting broke out between the army protecting it and the Muslims — the Prophet ﷺ and the Islamic army with its small light force came with three hundred and thirteen soldiers and the opponent had a thousand with a well-equipped army. A magnificent divine victory was given to the Muslims — Abu Jahl and a number of enemies were killed. The disbelievers thought Makkah would not be overcome — but when Makkah was conquered, the disbelievers' hearts had come to recognise the greatness of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — and you then saw — wa-raʾayta l-nāsa yadkhulūna fī dīni llāhi afwājā — you saw that the peoples entered religion in waves. Tell me — when you were enslaved, a thousand enemies were killed from a fight — so three enemies fell while thousands more multiplied — those who killed thousands by the sword of Islam became dead, and those who come to Islam of their own will — after the conquests (ghazawāt) the Mission became universal — and at the battle of Ḥunayn they also had a clash — and the wars of the world are universal — and the Great War is now inevitable — may we hold back and turn our face from war — perform as an act of gratitude for the Raḥmat li-l-ʿālamīn (Mercy for All Worlds) — and perform as gratitude — their hearts will be nurtured — so let's both be good, and the Afterlife will also be good, and al-ḥamdu lillāh — praise be to Allah.
فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَاسْتَغْفِرْهُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ تَوَّابًا
fa-sabbiḥ bi-ḥamdi rabbika wa-staghfirhu innahu kāna tawwābā.
"Then glorify the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness — indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance." (al-Naṣr 110:3)
Fa-sabbiḥ — then glorify, proclaim the purity and holiness of Allah — and narrate all His goodness. Bi-ḥamd — with glorification, with praise. Rabbika — your Lord. Bi-ḥamdi rabbika — glorify your Lord's purity with His praises — expressing gratitude. Wa-staghfirhu — and seek His forgiveness — seek it — ask from it — make this duʿāʾ so that from it we may place ourselves before Allah's mercy as humble and lowly — innahu — indeed He. Kāna — was, is and will be. Tawwābā — the one who accepts repentance with grace and mercy.
Translation: "Then glorify your Lord's praises with His glory — and seek His forgiveness — and indeed He was and is and will remain the Accepter of repentance."
Esteemed readers! When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began giving the message of Islam, all kinds of enemies appeared — various categories of enemies were there. He left his homeland of Makkah al-Mukarrama — and Allah did not let the oppressors rest — Abu Jahl harassed him — Saʿd ibn ʿIbāda gave him a threat — the disbelievers planned to cut off provisions — fighting broke out — the Muslims were small in number — a magnificent divine victory came — the disbelievers' hearts came to recognise the greatness of Allah's Messenger ﷺ — Allah opened the gates of the fortresses of enemies. It is the account of all the battles (ghazawāt). May Allah make a great and universal war a thing of shame and regret — and the battle of war's situation — and the Raḥmat li-l-ʿālamīn, may we make it universal — and may we do it with a grateful heart, both in this world and in the next may we be good — and al-ḥamdu lillāh — praise be to Allah.
