The Wali — When Will It Be Said of Fulaan That He Is a Wali? (ولی)

When will it be said of a certain person that he is a wali (friend of Allah)? Even for a single moment, fanāʾiyyat (spiritual annihilation) has passed through him — some say that fanāʾiyyat is given to him as a gift — some say no — the wali is one through whom fanāʾiyyat has passed (but Hazrat Qibla's guidance is that even if fanāʾiyyat passes through him for a moment, if it then delays for a very long time — if it then goes to fanāʾiyyat — he is a wali).
