Chapter 7

Dham al-Ulama al-Su'

Condemnation of Evil Scholars

Vocabulary: ابْتَدَعَ ; invented a new thing. لَا يُعِيْدُهَا ; will not return it. Translation: Hazrat Hassan bin Thabit (RA) narrates that he said: Whenever a people invent a new thing in religion, Allah Almighty extracts a Sunnah like it, suspends it, and then does not return that Sunnah to them until the Day of Judgment.

Translation: Hazrat Ibrahim bin Maisarah (RA) narrates that he said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever honored the person of innovation, invented new matters, he has assisted in demolishing Islam.

O people! We have stated earlier that without the source of Qur'an and hadith, considering any act as worship is an innovation. There are two things here: (1) Doing some work out of one's own natural necessity, so it is not an innovation. (2) Good works which he does not even consider obligatory, these are also not innovation. Remember this! The principle in everything is permissible (i.e. considered Halal). The one who claims prohibition or impermissibility is responsible for the proof of that matter. Let him bring proof from it, this ruling is against the Qur'an and hadith. Applying rulings from one's own heart is not legislation, but rather legislation in religion. O people! Nowadays people have deteriorated greatly in their love for non-religions. Non-religious people by following their ways have moved very far away from the Qur'an and hadith. Inventing a new thing in religion is undoubtedly impermissible. It is an innovation. We have the Qur'an and hadith sufficient for us to understand it, and this is the work of every Tom, Dick, and Harry. This is the work of the Imams and leaders of religion. Alas! So much freedom has come in religion that without acting upon the Hereafter, they have started considering every good deed as an innovation. So much refinement has come in it that focusing on apparent things, the soul of action has not remained. Sincerity is a very big thing. Sincerity is born from action, it is the spirit of action. It is worthy of being remembered. Do a little work but do it purely for God. Doing a good thing repeatedly or making it a habit, a person becomes accustomed to it and that worship becomes easy, and from this a connection and attachment with good deeds is created and its signs of goodness and blessings become apparent. In this same way, bad matters produce darkness and blackness in the heart. First a black spot (stain) falls, then as it grows it encompasses the whole heart, and then the distinction between good and bad does not remain.

Remember! By meeting with people of other religions, especially after the time of Jalaluddin Akbar, there was a lot of mixing between Hindus and Muslims. Hindu women came into the houses of Muslims and despite becoming Muslims, Hindu-like customs remained. In order to keep Muslims pleased with the fine temperament, they were kept from stopping these customs, and pure Islam did not remain in its simplicity.

Translation: Allah Almighty says: The example of those people who were burdened with the Torah, to tell the truth they did not bear its burden. Their example is like a donkey with a pile of books on its back (which carries four books). How bad is the example of those people who denied the verses of God.

لَا يُنْتَفَعُ ; benefit is not taken from it. لَا يُنْفَقُ ; is not spent, is not expended. Translation: Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The example of the knowledge from which benefit is not derived is like the treasure from which nothing is spent in the path of God. (Narrated by Ahmad and Darimi, and also in Mishkat)

Vocabulary: يُوْشِكُ ; near is. رَسْمٌ ; writing. عَامِرَةٌ ; populated. خَرَابٌ ; desolate. أَدِيْمٌ ; leather. تَعُوْدُ ; returns, comes back.

Translation: Hazrat Ali (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, a time will soon come when nothing of Islam will remain except its name, and nothing of the Qur'an will remain except its writing. The mosques will be physically populated but will be empty of guidance and desolate. Under the canopy of the sky, their scholars will be the worst of all. Mischief will emerge from them and will return towards them, meaning the evils will turn back towards them. (Narrated by Baihaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman).

Vocabulary: أُنَاسٌ ; many people, it is plural of اسم. سَيَتَفَقَّهُوْنَ ; soon they will understand the matters of religion, soon they will acquire understanding in religion. نَأْتِي ; we will come. الْأُمَرَاءَ ; we will go to the rulers. نُصِيْبُ ; we will acquire. نَعْتَزِلُ ; we will remain separate. يُجْتَنٰی ; gets acquired, is harvested. اجْتِنَاءٌ ; to acquire. يُجْتَنٰی ; fruit. لَا يُجْتَنٰی ; fruit is not plucked, not taken. قَتَادٌ ; Babul tree. شَوْكٌ ; thorn. خَطَايَا plural of خَطِيْئَةٌ ; sin, wrong deed. Translation: Hazrat Ibn Abbas (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Soon from my Ummah there will be some people who will acquire understanding in religion and will recite the Qur'an, and they will say "We will go to the rulers and acquire a portion of their world (wealth) and keep ourselves separate from them with our religion." This will never happen, just as nothing is gathered from the Babul tree except thorns, similarly nothing is gathered from proximity to them except (Muhammad bin Sabah said) sins. (Muhammad bin Sabah meant sins by the meaning of Khata).

O people! Look at some Sheikhs and Maulvis, how they are running after the worldly people. Understand that we will acquire wealth and other benefits from them but will not let our religion be corrupted, but this will not happen. It is fire, if one sits nearby and doesn't get heat from the blacksmith's furnace, sparks will fly, and if not, a spark will fly and burn your clothes. You will want to escape but won't be able to escape. It is very difficult to save one's religion in the company of worldly people.

See the children of the elders, what they were and what their children are. They used to leave animals and busy themselves in Dhikr. If this animal was given to humans to eat, they would not eat.

لَا تَسْأَلُوْنِيْ ; do not ask me. عَنِ الشَّرِّ ; about evil. شِرَارٌ plural of شَرِيْرٌ . Translation: Al-Akhwas bin Hakim narrates from his father, who narrates that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ about evil. So You ﷺ said, do not ask me about evil and ask me about good. You stated this three times. Then You said, listen! Indeed the worst of evils are the bad scholars (worse than bad) and indeed the best of good are the good scholars. (Narrated by Darimi).

عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ قَالَ إِنَّ مِنْ شَرِّ النَّاسِ عِنْدَ اللهِ مَنْزِلَةً يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَالِمٌ لَا يُنْتَفَعُ بِعِلْمِهِ ۔ (رواہ الدارمی) فاعتبروا یا اولی الابصار۔

Vocabulary: مَنْزِلَةٌ ; in status. لَا يُنْتَفَعُ ; benefit is not derived, no benefit comes from him. Translation: Abu Darda (RA) narrates that he said, undoubtedly the worst of people in status near God on the Day of Judgment is the scholar whose knowledge is not benefited from. (Narrated by Darimi) What are the commands to scholars after the explicit clear commands? They were given the inheritance of the Prophets, that is, they were honored with the wealth of knowledge, so it is required of them that the seekers of knowledge be benefited with this divine wealth. But remember that an issue is twisted to be described. Doing interpretations and elaborations. Creating leniency for the rich and wealthy people and entangling an issue and highlighting its dark side and describing it in such a way or issuing a fatwa by which the oppressor gets support and there is excess upon the oppressed. O people! One thing to remember is very necessary that if someone asks an issue from a knowledgeable person, the one being asked, if he does not know the full answer to it, should remain silent or give an incomplete answer.

Allah Almighty says: Are these people being deceived concerning Me or are they daring against Me? I swear by Myself that I will send such a Fitna upon these people that it will leave the intelligent among them bewildered. (Narrated by Tirmidhi and also in Mishkat)

Translation: Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: In the end of times there will be deceitful liars, they will bring to you such Ahadith which neither you nor your forefathers have heard. So avoid them and save yourselves, lest they misguide you or involve you in Fitna. (Narrated by Muslim and also in Mishkat)

Gentlemen! Today, prophets are emerging in every household. Remember! No prophet can come after Khatam-un-Nabiyyin. Yes, this prophecy will prove true that in the end of times many Dajjals will emerge. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke the truth.
