Chapter 37

Bab Fima Yalhaqu bi-Mahabatihi

The Rights and Requisites of Love and Veneration for the Prophet ﷺ

(Tajreed al-Bukhari, Volume 1) O friends! Out of joy of Hazrat Musa (AS) obtaining deliverance from Pharaoh, Hazrat Musa (AS) kept a fast, and in the joy of his deliverance, the Prophet ﷺ also kept a fast and ordered others to keep it. Are we not more deserving to celebrate the joy of the birth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Without a doubt, we are. If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not been born, the whole world would have remained an abode of disbelief. Some people want to give this fallacy as well, that celebrating the joy of Milad Mubarak is imitating the Hindus' celebration of Ram Navami. We are Muslims, we follow Hazrat Musa and the Holy Prophet ﷺ. We have no concern with others. Such misguided thoughts are generated in the hearts of those whose disposition naturally possesses crookedness. Khuda gar kaj-rau ko paida nah karta / Qasam hai Khuda ki khudai na hoti --- Lawlaka lama khalaqtul aflak (Hadith Qudsi) (If God had not created the crooked ones / By God, there would be no Godhood --- "Were it not for you, I would not have created the universe" (Hadith Qudsi))

This chapter is regarding the rights and requisites of the love and reverence for the Holy Prophet ﷺ*

We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of glad tidings and a warner, so that you people may believe in Allah and His Messenger, and honor him and revere him."*

وَقَالَ اللّٰهُ تَعَالٰى : يٰنِسَاءَ النَّبِيِّ لَسْتُنَّ كَأَحَدٍ مِّنَ النِّسَاءِ إِنِ اتَّقَيْتُنَّ فَلَا تَخْضَعْنَ بِالْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ الَّذِيْ فِيْ قَلْبِهِ مَرَضٌ وَّ قُلْنَ قَوْلًا مَّعْرُوْفًا ۚ - (آیت ۳۲ - احزاب) *Translation:- And Allah Almighty also says this: "O wives of the Prophet! You are not like [any] ordinary women, if you fear Allah. So do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with straightforward appropriate speech."*

O friends! In these verses, Allah Almighty has bestowed a high rank upon the pure wives of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, that you are not like other women. Your status has risen above all. You are the mothers of all Muslims. And further the command is:

---

الزَّكٰوةَ وَأَطِعْنَ اللّٰهَ وَرَسُوْلَهُ ؕ إِنَّمَا يُرِيْدُ اللّٰهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيْرًا ۚ - وَاذْكُرْنَ مَا يُتْلٰى فِيْ بُيُوْتِكُنَّ مِنْ اٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ وَالْحِكْمَةِ ؕ إِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ لَطِيْفًا خَبِيْرًا ؕ - (آیت ۳۳، ۳۴ - احزاب) *Translation:- And this is also the divine command that: "O wives of the Prophet! And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer with correctness and sincerity, give Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification. And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and wisdom. Indeed, Allah is Ever Subtle and Acquainted [with all things]." (He is fully aware).*

O friends! Reflect! In these verses, Allah Almighty has commanded the wives of the Prophet to remain seated in their houses. They are not permitted to adorn themselves and go out. The command given to the Prophet is the same command given to the Ummah. And the command given to the wives of the Prophet is the command that reaches all Muslim women. But unfortunately, Muslim women wander around aimlessly. They are adorning themselves lavishly. Now women in pavilions and ponds are swimming, competing as cycle-queens and beauty-queens. The results of this are unspeakable (meaning unfit to be mentioned). Once in an exhibition ground, more expenditure was spent on women than on alcohol. God forbid. We seek refuge with Allah.

By the way, for whom was the verse of purification revealed? For the Ahl al-Bayt. Who are the Ahl al-Bayt? These verses were revealed for the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In the Holy Qur'an, the word 'Bayt' is mentioned in several places, and the wives of the Prophet are meant by it. This is perfectly rational, that the stronger the relationship with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the stronger the connection will be. Therefore, the word "Ahl al-Bayt" strictly speaking, most accurately applies to the wives, because the relationship with a husband is the strongest. Second is the children of the wife.

Except for the pure wives, the rest of the Prophet's ﷺ relatives are from other houses (or have other houses). Among them are Bibi Fatima Zahra, Hazrat Ali, Imam Hasan, Imam Husain (peace be upon them all). From their close relatives is the progeny of Hashim. Because the house of Hazrat Ali was separate from the house of the Messenger of God ﷺ. For this reason, the Prophet took these four noble ones in his cloak and said: "O God! These too are the people of my house." "Haa ulaa'i ahlu bayti." Hazrat Umm al-Mu'mineen Bibi Umm Salama (RA) wanted to enter the cloak, so the Prophet ﷺ said: "You are upon goodness, you are upon goodness. You are from the wives of the Prophet." Meaning, you are among the wives of the Prophet.

Translation:- And Allah Almighty has stated that: The wives of the Prophet are the mothers of the Ummah.*

---

You are not permitted to ever marry the wives of the Prophet after his demise (because they are mothers, and in no state is marriage with a mother permissible).*

*Yaghzookum min ni'matin*: In what He nourishes you with of bounties. *Translation:- Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrates. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Love Allah because He nourishes you every morning and evening with His bounties, and love me because of the love of Allah, and love the people of my household (meaning the wives of the Prophet) because of my love."*

O friends! "Ahl al-Bayt" means the people of the house, the members of the house. The wife is generally called the dweller of the house. In Zaid's house, his mother, sister, daughters and wives live. And if the house is emptied, will the mother be brought into that room? The house will not be considered empty. Similarly, if the sister or daughter goes away, the house will not be considered empty except for the wives, and if only the wives are present in the house legally, then the house will not be considered empty. Yes, if the wives go away, then the house is considered legally empty. So "Ahl al-Bayt" refers primarily to the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, but the Master ﷺ also included Hazrat Ali, the difficult-resolver, and the princes Hasan and Husain (RA) in his cloak and said, "These are also my Ahl al-Bayt." Therefore, these elders and the descendants of Hazrat Husain are also called "Ahl al-Bayt".

*Yahummunee*: Matters to me, worries me. *As-Sabiroon*: Those who are patient. *As-Siddeeqoon*: Completely truthful people, or true ones. *Translation:- Sayyidah Aisha Siddiqah (may Allah Almighty be pleased with her) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his wives: "After my departure, your matter is among the matters that are important to me. And no one will patiently bear (meaning serving you) except the patient and truthful people."* (This hadith is in Tirmidhi Sharif and also in Taysir).

إِنَّ الَّذِي يَحْنُو عَلَيْكُنَّ بَعْدِي لَهُوَ الصَّادِقُ الْبَارُّ قَالَهُ لِأَزْوَاجِهِ *(Ahmad and Ibn Sa'd and al-Hakim and al-Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym in Fada'il al-Sahaba from Umm Salama - Kanz Vol. 6)*

Lughat: يَحْنُو : kindness and compassion or remembers. عَلَيْكُنَّ : upon you women. البَارُّ : righteous. Its plural is Abrar and comes as bararah as well.

Translation: The Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "The one who will show kindness to you after me is truthful, righteous." The Prophet ﷺ said this to his wives. (This hadith is narrated by Ahmad in Musnad and Ibn Sa'd, Hakim, Tabarani and Abu Nu'aym from Hazrat Umm Salama (RA) regarding virtues, and it is also in the sixth volume of Kanz al-'Ummal)

(Ibn Asakir from Abu Salama from Abd al-Rahman from his father - Kanz Vol. 6)*

Lughat: لَا يَعْطِفُ : will not show affection and kindness. عطف : kindness, friendship, inclination, turning the reins.

Translation: The Prophet ﷺ said, "No one will show affection and kindness to you after me except patient and truthful people." You ﷺ said this to your wives. (This hadith is narrated by Ibn Asakir from Hazrat Abu Salama and they narrated it from Abd al-Rahman from his father, and this hadith is also in the sixth volume of Kanz al-'Ummal)

Lughat: خِيَارُ : better, doer of good, righteous, preferred people, good people.

Translation: The Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "The best of you are those who treat my wives well." (This hadith is narrated by Ibn Asakir from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA), and this hadith is also in the sixth volume of Kanz al-'Ummal)

---

Lughat: نَزَلَتْ : revealed, descended. جَالِسَةٌ : sitting. بَابٌ : door. بَيْتِ النَّبِيِّ : house of the Prophet. يُرِيدُ : wants, intends. عَنْكُم : from all of you. الرِّجْسَ : impurity. يُطَهِّرَكُمْ : that He may purify you, make you clean and pure. جَلَّلَهُمْ : covered them. أَزْوَاج : plural of zawj (wives). كِسَاءٍ : sheet, blanket. أَلَسْتُ : am I not? إِنَّكِ : indeed you are.

Translation: Umm al-Mu'minin Bibi Umm Salama (RA) narrates. She says that when this verse was revealed she was sitting near the door of the Prophet's house. (Allah Almighty says) "Allah only intends to remove impurity from you, O people of the Prophet's household, and to purify you completely." At that time, in the house were the Messenger of Allah, Bibi Fatima, Hazrat Hasan, and Hazrat Husain. You ﷺ covered them with your blanket and said: "O God, these are the people of my household. Remove impurity from them and purify them." Umm Salama says, I submitted, "O Messenger of Allah! Am I not among the Ahl al-Bayt?" You ﷺ said, "You are upon goodness, you are among the wives of the Prophet."

Lughat: مِرْطٌ : sheet, woolen blanket, plural is muroot. مُرَحَّلٌ : patterned, embroidered. أَسْوَدُ : black.

Translation: Hazrat Aisha Siddiqa (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and he was wearing a black patterned (embroidered) sheet. Then Hasan came and he entered him into his sheet. Then Husain came and he entered him as well. Then Bibi Fatima came and he entered her as well. Then Ali came and he entered him and said thus:

إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنْكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا *(Allah only intends to keep impurity away from you, O people of the household, and to purify you completely).*

(This hadith is also in Tirmidhi and the second volume of Taysir)

---

Lughat: سُئِلَ : was asked, question was asked. أَيُّ : who, which. أَحَبُّ : more beloved, most dear. شَمَّ يَشَمُّ : to smell. ضَمَّ يَضُمُّ : to embrace, to cling to the chest.

Translation: It is narrated from Hazrat Anas (RA) that he said, the Noble Prophet ﷺ was asked, who among the people of your household is most beloved to you? He said, "Hasan and Husain." And the Prophet ﷺ used to embrace these two boys to his chest and smell them. (This hadith is also in Tirmidhi and the second volume of Taysir)

Lughat: أُنْشِدُكُمُ اللَّهَ : I adjure you by Allah.

Translation: It is narrated from Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam that he said the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the people! "I adjure you by Allah regarding the people of my household." He ﷺ said this three times. We asked Zaid who are the people of his household? He (Zaid) said they are the offspring of Hazrat Ali, offspring of Hazrat Ja'far, offspring of Hazrat Aqeel and offspring of Hazrat Abbas. (This hadith is in Qadi Iyad's "Shifa")

O people! Hazrat Ja'far, Hazrat Aqeel are paternal cousins of Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Abbas is his paternal uncle. They are the paternal uncles of the father of Hazrat Ali and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The offspring of these esteemed figures are all "Aal-e-Payambar". They are called Bani Hashim or Sadat-e-Bani Hashim. However, since Hazrat Ali was the husband of Bibi Fatima Zahra and both of his sons Hazrat Hasan and Husain (peace be upon them) were very dear to the Prophet ﷺ, the Master gave preference to their offspring over his own offspring. That is why the offspring of Bibi Fatima are called Sadat-e-Bani Fatima and they have more proximity to the Prophet ﷺ.

لَا يَمَسُّ : will not touch. رَأَى : saw. رَآنِي : saw me.

Translation: Hazrat Jabir (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The fire will not touch a Muslim who has seen me or has seen the one who has seen me." (Tirmidhi - Taysir Vol. 2 p. 141)

Lughat: مَعَ : with, accompanying. عَمٌّ : paternal uncle. عَمَّةٌ : paternal aunt. صَوَّامٌ : one who fasts abundantly. قَوَّامٌ : one who stands for prayer for a long time.

Translation: Hazrat Jami' bin Umair narrates, he says "I went with my paternal aunt to Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha. Then she (my aunt) asked who among women was most beloved to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Hazrat Aisha said, 'Fatima.' Then it was asked, among men? She said, 'Her husband who is one who fasts abundantly and stands for worship (at night).'" (This hadith is in Tirmidhi and Taysir)

Lughat: لَأَرْجُو : I certainly have hope. If read with a silent lam it means "I hope". Like this "أَرْجُو" is the first person singular word. It means 'I hope'. "أَرْجُو" is not. Meaning there is no alif in it. Like we say "نَرْجُوا", 'we hope'. This is an alif of plural. Therefore, while writing and reading, care should be taken of these things otherwise the meaning will change.

Translation: Hazrat Anas (RA) narrates that the Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "I have hope for my Ummah due to the love of Abu Bakr and Umar, just as I have hope for them due to the saying of La ilaha illallah." (Daylami narrated this hadith from Hazrat Anas and it is in the sixth volume of Kanz al-'Ummal)

O friends! Until a person reads the Kalima "La ilaha illallah", they cannot attain salvation. In the same way, one will not attain salvation until they keep Hazrat Abu Bakr and Umar as friends.

Lughat: لَا تَسُبُّوا : do not abuse, do not say bad things. سَيِّدَا : two leaders (it is a dual word). كُهُولٌ : middle-aged people. شَبَابٌ : youth. شَابٌّ : young, its plural is shabab.

---

Translation: The Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "O people! Do not abuse Abu Bakr and Umar because they are the leaders of the middle-aged people of Paradise. They are the leaders of all the earlier and later people, except for the Prophets and Messengers. And do not abuse Hasan and Husain because both of them are the leaders of the youth of Paradise, whether they are earlier or later. And do not abuse Ali because whoever abuses Ali has abused me, and whoever abuses me has abused Allah, and whoever abuses Allah, Allah Almighty will punish him." (This hadith is narrated by Ibn Asakir, Ibn al-Najjar from Hazrat Imam Husain ibn Ali. And it is in the sixth volume of Kanz al-'Ummal)

Lughat: فَوَالَّذِي : so by the oath of that Being. نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ : my life is in His control. أَحَدًا : anyone. أُحُدٍ : Uhud, a famous mountain in Medina. أَنْفَقَ : spent. ذَهَبًا : gold. مَا بَلَغَ : did not reach. مُدَّ : a measure of Arabia that holds grain a little less than a seer. مُدّ : 1/2 1 chhatak (according to Hyderabad weight). Half a seer according to current times (equal to a pound).

Translation: It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O people! Do not abuse my Companions. By the oath of that God in Whose hand is my life, if any person spends gold equal to the mountain of Uhud in the path of God, even then it will not equal one mudd (half a seer) of theirs (the Companions), nor even half of its weight." (This hadith is in Sahih Muslim and the second volume of Taysir)

Lughat: سَكَتَ : was silent, stayed quiet. عَاشِر : tenth.

Translation: Hazrat Saeed bin Zaid (RA) narrates, he said I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying

---

that Abu Bakr is in Paradise and Umar is in Paradise and Uthman is in Paradise and Ali is in Paradise and Talha is in Paradise and Zubair is in Paradise and Saad bin Malik is in Paradise and Abd al-Rahman bin Awf is in Paradise and Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah is in Paradise and stayed silent regarding the tenth. So people said, "Who is the tenth companion?" Saeed said "Saeed bin Zaid", meaning himself. (They are called 'Ashara Mubashshara). (This hadith is narrated in Abu Dawud with these words and also in Tirmidhi)

Lughat: أَرْأَفُ : very kind, very compassionate. أَصْدَقُ : highly truthful, truthful. أَقْضَا : best judge, those who make the best decisions. أَفْرَضُ : well-versed in the knowledge of Fara'idh. Those who know the knowledge of distributing shares of inheritance are called Fara'idh.

Translation: Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (RA) narrates, the Noble Prophet ﷺ said, "In my Ummah, the one most compassionate towards my Ummah is Abu Bakr. And the one most firm in the matters of religion is Umar. And the one most truthful in modesty is Uthman. And the one who makes the best decisions is Ali. And the one who knows the knowledge of distribution of inheritance best is Zaid bin Thabit. And the best reciter (knowing the science of Tajweed) of the Book of Allah is Ubayy bin Ka'b. And the most knowledgeable regarding Halal and Haram in a better way is Muadh bin Jabal. And without a doubt, there is a trustee for every Ummah, and the trustee for this Ummah is Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah." (This hadith is in the sixth volume of Kanz al-'Ummal)

Lughat: هَادِيًا : one who guides. مَهْدِيًّا : guided. وَاهْدِبِهِ : through him guide others.

Translation: Hazrat Abd al-Rahman bin Umaira (RA), who is a Companion of the Noble Prophet ﷺ, narrates from the Noble Prophet ﷺ that he said for Hazrat Muawiya, "O Allah! Make him a guide and rightly guided, and through him guide others." (This hadith is in Tirmidhi Sharif)

Lughat: لَمَّا : when. عَزَلَ : dismissed, removed from service. وَلَّى : appointed as governor, assigned the service of governorship.

Translation: It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Idris al-Khawlani, they said that when Hazrat Umar bin al-Khattab (RA) dismissed Umair bin Saad from the governorship of Hims and appointed Hazrat Muawiya as governor, people said he dismissed Umair and made Muawiya the governor. Hearing this, Hazrat Umar said, "Do not remember Muawiya except with goodness, because I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying, 'O God, guide people through him.'" (This hadith is in Tirmidhi)

O friends! There is no Companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ who is better than everyone in all aspects. One Companion has a specific distinction from the other. Then the absolute greatest virtue is for the "Shaykhain" (Abu Bakr and Umar). There has never been any difference of opinion regarding the Shaykhain being the best. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ described their excellence at various times. He made a gesture about their caliphate: "To whom should I give Zakat after you?" "To Abu Bakr." "If he is not there?" "To Umar." While laying the foundation stone, the Prophet ﷺ first placed it, then Abu Bakr, then Umar, then he said they are my caliphs. At the time of his passing, he did not explicitly utter the word of Caliphate, but commanded Abu Bakr to lead the prayer when the time came. Anyway, there was no disagreement regarding the Shaykhain being the best. This is Abdullah bin Saba's working that he took the wives of the Prophet out of the Ahl al-Bayt. Even though look at the verse of the Noble Quran, everything fits continuously on the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. Then fabricated narrations were made on which Tabari placed reliance, they are all in agreement; then he raised differences of opinion of the Companions in which there is their internal rank (meaning wanting to have sympathy for one another), then the issue of "Ismah" (infallibility) came up that the Ahl al-Bayt are upon the truth and the one who opposes them is an oppressor and without exception, God Almighty is pleased with the Companions "رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ" He says (meaning Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Allah) that your staying pleased with them is exactly what God wants! And behold! God Almighty says about the Companions "لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَ" (Fath - Ayat 29) Those who are jealous of the Companions are disbelievers. Now understand, those who burn with jealousy against the Companions, what are they? This fitna was pressed very hard and for thirteen hundred years its suppression is continuing. The truth is that some people wanted to strike at the foundational matters of Islam, according to the command of God and the Prophet and some people's thought was that it is more important to manage the center. Those people who see those opposing the center, they execute them, annihilate them. This issue is of intentions. Only God knows the intentions. Their matter is not in our hands. The decision is in the hands of God.
